This client is one of the nation’s largest investor-owned electric systems.

SCOPE OF PROJECT

The client was undertaking system-wide upgrades to increase reliability and decrease system outages.

Scope of Services Provided

Activities included:

  • Full civil site planning for expansion of substation to three (3) times its original size. This included fencing plans, grading plans, and traffic & maintenance planning.
  • Design for structural steel for low profile, 138kV 5-breaker ring bus. This included A-frame dead end structures, H-Frame dead end structures, bus and switch supports, and other equipment stands.
  • Foundation design for all structures including dead-end structures and a new control house.
  • Design for below and above grade electrical installation detailing all components, line entrances, and switching equipment. This work also included ground grid analysis and lightning protection system design.
  • Final design package included complete electrical schematic and wiring design for all breakers, switches, protective line, bus, and equipment relaying.
  • Full detailed design for a new, prefabricated control house building including all new AC and DC power systems, relay and protection panels, communications, and a new SCADA RTU.
  • Procurement documentation for all project components including a new control house, CCVTs, circuit breakers, station service system, disconnects and motor operated switches, relay panels, conduit, cable, cable trench, auxiliary steel, overhead connections and miscellaneous fittings.
  • Verification of existing protection and wiring schemes to ensure integrity of station systems during construction
  • Construction administration services during contractor installation period
Results

At the Midwest substation, our team provided the engineering for a substation expansion to accommodate a new, 5-breaker ring bus with provision for a 6th breaker and a future line exit. This new ring bus allows for greater regional operational flexibility for over 60MW of local customer load.
