CLIENT PROFILE

The client is a USA steel affiliate with one of the widest mills in North America, rolling hot-rolled plate widths up to 160 inches and thicknesses up to six inches. They serve shipyards, oilfield fabricators, heavy equipment producers and many other end users.

SCOPE OF work

Our team worked with the client to fulfill the role of construction and project management advisor in addition to engineering and project scheduling advisor for their $350 million plate mill plant upgrades to this existing 1960’s era United States Steel facility. The major equipment components of the upgrade consisted of:

  • Descaler Unit and System
  • Hot Plate Leveler
  • Side Trimming and Crop Shears
  • New Four High Finishing Stand
  • Accelerated Cooling and Direct Quench System
  • Cooling Beds
  • Cold Plate Leveler
Challenges

The client began the project without an overall integrated project schedule. Our management team directed the equipment suppliers, and primary contractors to develop a detailed integrated project schedule; then the team used these schedules to produce a collaborative management level schedule.

The client was experiencing equipment and material delays. Our firm instituted a team for equipment expediting, tracking, and shipping management. This led to overall better material management (onsite storage) and improved scheduling accuracy.

 

Unique Approaches

On projects of this magnitude, thousands and thousands of documents require proper tracking. Our firm initiated and trained the client’s team on our software to maintain and track documents, submittals, requests for information etc. In addition, we worked with the client to provide an overall file structure for drawing and specification storage.

The client’s original team did not contain the resources to properly review and track the installation engineering firms status and drawings. Our corporation provided the professional resources to review specifications and drawings for code compliance and constructability.

 

Results

During the project, our group conducted several ‘brain storming’ sessions with the client’s affiliate’s upper level management. The focus of these meetings was to continuously analyze and measure the overall team and project needs. The conferences resulted in augmenting new staff members to the project and innovative manners of equipment installation. Our team and the client worked with the equipment suppliers to ‘pre-assemble’ as much of the equipment as possible. These ‘pre-assembly’ approaches minimized facility downtime and adding to production.
