Blast Furnace Rebuild For an Iron Production Facility
CLIENT PROFILE
The client is an iron production facility in southwestern Pennsylvania.
SCOPE OF WORK
The team provided a cost and design analysis for a March 2019 rebuild of the client’s Blast Furnace iron production facility.
Scope of Services Provided
In addition to cost and design analysis, the project team worked closely with the client project manager to develop the rebuild scope of work, coordinating and executing engineering efforts, developing an overall installed cost estimate, and creating a detailed project schedule. Prior to and throughout construction, our team assisted with managing project activities between suppliers, vendors, and construction contractors. Our experts provided engineering design services for civil, structural, mechanical, refractory, and piping disciplines, as well as post-installation commissioning management. Lead project management of third-party contractors suppling electrical, instrumentation, and process control development as also handled by our team.
Results
To meet the client’s outage schedule, the field team assisted in supervising several critical outage tasks. A major win for our client was the refurbishment and re-installation of their taphole drill. Originally not included in the project, the client asked our group to address the drill assembly late in the outage. The field team with engineering support worked around the clock to develop designs and on-the-spot solutions which resulted in a final product that not only enabled an on-time project completion, but significant safety, quality, and functional improvements of the drill were realized.
Given the vast project scope, our firm was able to leverage its previous Blast Furnace engineering, outage support and project services with the client to complete the project within budget and on-time. By tracking Earned Value and project performance for the client, the team was able to provide additional post-outage tasks as part of the initial budget. This included “as-build” drawing completion, as well as thorough post-construction wrap-up and project “lessons learned” for the client.
